The Editor’s View: Brand, New

Last fall I received an invite to preview the Warby Parker store in Buckhead before its grand opening. I’m a fan so I was excited to visit the eyeglass brand’s first free standing store in the southeast (which in and of itself said something interesting to me about the retail market in Atlanta).

When I searched the store’s location online, I thought to myself, ‘Oh yes, I’m familiar with this area’ and expected to pull up to a gleaming standalone storefront. When I rounded the corner onto Buckhead Avenue, my eyes slowly scanned up to the Hermes signage at the top of the corner store in front of me. I wasn’t even parked but realized that I had slowed to a stop, completely captivated by this luxury shopping oasis that had emerged. I quickly pulled my car into a spot curbside, hopped out and started taking photos of brand logos … Tod’s and Jimmy Choo to be exact. I had to send quick snapshots to my friend, a freelance stylist who had just relocated from Buckhead back to her home state of Texas.

We were both exceptionally impressed with what I described to her as a bit of Rodeo Drive in Atlanta. I also texted AT’s associate editor Kamille Whittaker and told her, something big is happening here and it echoed a conversation she and I had after I read a couple of years ago that Atlanta’s high-end shopping market had sustained during the recession. Buckhead Atlanta was absolute proof of that.

And then there was Ponce City Market that had already opened in August, The Avalon which opened last October and the fact that Lenox Mall had announced that Topshop/Topman, a major British style powerhouse, was under construction.

So, our annual Why We Love Atlanta issue delves into the city’s burgeoning retail boom.

I’ll warn you, by the time you’re finished reading, you’ll be ready for a little retail therapy. AT
