Writer Guidelines

Thanks for your interest in writing for Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine; Black Atlanta's No. 1 resource for information on business and wealth-building.

Please read these guidelines carefully, as they are important to creating a successful relationship between us, you and, ultimately, our reader.

Editorial Mission Statement - Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine Tribune: The Magazine is Georgia’s leading minority source for thought-provoking, relevant news and information on business and wealth-building.

Our audience is progressive, community-involved, culturally aware and family-oriented executives, professionals and entrepreneurs.

We educate our readers and present ideas, viewpoints and possible solutions to the issues we cover that challenge conventional wisdom. Our ultimate goal is to present articles, features and commentary that get our readers thinking about, talking about and participating in economic empowerment.

- Our Editorial Focus - The primary editorial focus of Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine is business and wealth-building, politics and education.

Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine does not publish poetry, fiction or unsolicited editorials.

Freelance Opportunities - Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine is approximately 30 percent freelance written and we welcome queries from experienced freelancers. We accept freelance articles as cover stories, features and in our regular sections.

Submitting Queries - Article queries on subjects appropriate to Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine are always welcome. Unsolicited manuscripts are not accepted.

Please note that
Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine does not publish syndicated columns or stories that have run in other publications.  All features, cover stories and profiles published in Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine are original materials written exclusively for Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine.  Please do not submit queries for syndicated columns or manuscripts of previously published materials.

All feature articles and cover stories are assigned. Stories are usually assigned three to six months in advance of publication date, and it generally takes four to six weeks for the editors to respond to queries. If yours is a time-sensitive topic, please submit your proposals accordingly.   A separate query letter should be sent for each topic. Please keep all queries to one page in length.

We accept queries by e-mail only.

If you have not written for us before, be sure to include a
current resume and no less than three, but no more than five samples of your previously published, business-oriented works. These items will be accepted via fax, mail or e-mail.

Writers with specific story ideas should submit a query via e-mail that clearly, succinctly and persuasively answers the following questions:

1.       What is your story idea and why is it newsworthy?

2.       How and why is the story significant to Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine's readers?

3.       What specific insights about the topic will your story deliver?

4.       What primary and secondary sources will you use for reporting the story?

5.       What experience have you had as a freelance writer, and why are you qualified to handle this assignment?

A good query will convince us that your article is a must-read feature for Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine's audience. A great one will tell us why the article should be a cover story.

Fact-Checking Requirements - Writers are required to conduct their own fact checking and are responsible for accuracy. Please provide a complete list of all sources mentioned in your article, including names, current addresses and phone numbers so the editors can verify names, titles, professional associations, etc.

If a book is referred to in the article, you must include the author's name, the book's publisher, year of publication and the book's price if it is still in print. If statistics are quoted, complete information on the source of the data must be included so editors can verify their accuracy.

Submission Format - All submissions (initial submissions, articles submitted on speculation, articles accepted for publication and work turned in on assignment) will be accepted by e-mail only (no disk submissions).  The article text should be attached to the e-mail message as a Microsoft Word document (PC format).  If you are not using Microsoft Word or are working in a Macintosh format, the file can be attached as an ASCII text document.  DO NOT paste the text of the article directly into the body of the e-mail message.

Material not submitted in this format will not be reviewed or accepted and no writer's fees will be paid.

Publication Rights - Atlanta Tribune: The Magazine purchases all print and electronic rights to all assigned articles. We purchase first North American serial rights, electronic rights and non-exclusive reprint rights to articles submitted on speculation.
Deadlines and Late Penalties - Writers are usually given between two and eight weeks to complete an assignment based on the article length and the complexity of the research involved. If a writer fails to meet the submission deadline agreed to in the "Assignment Letter," there is an initial twenty-five percent (25%) penalty and a five percent (5%) penalty each day thereafter on the remaining balance. Writers should note that deadline policies and associated late penalties are strictly adhered to.

How to Contact Us - All queries and any questions concerning these Writers' Guidelines or other editorial policies should be directed to Katrice Mines, editor, via e-mail at kmines@atlantatribune.com. All submissions should be sent directly to the attention of the editor.
